For Haley Kluge, reputable work experience is at no shortage. Kluge, a journalism student at Michigan State University with a design specialization and minor, has interned at two major magazines in New York City in the last two years. In the summer of 2015, she worked at Good Housekeeping. Recently, the MSU senior completed three months as an art intern for Cosmopolitan where she assisted in the art department creating the monthly issues.
“I’d primarily focus on designing pages for the magazine,” Kluge said. “But I’d also work on things like photoshoot preparation, typography research, updating content and pages for our editors and attending photoshoots.”
Kluge said her experience at Cosmopolitan was made great by the people she worked with and the projects she was assigned.
“The people at Cosmo were some of the kindest, most patient, and most talented individuals I’ve ever gotten the chance to work with, and I honestly am so thankful to have gotten a chance to work alongside of them,” Kluge said. “Working at Cosmo taught me so much about the craft of design and the world of magazine publications, and that’s the biggest thing I’ll take with me.”
Kluge enjoyed seeing her assignments come to life in the print issues and being able to hold her work in her hands.
“There’s something so satisfying about having a tangible product and knowing that you contributed to that,” Kluge said.
In addition to her previous position at Good Housekeeping, Kluge credits MSU and the School of Journalism for giving her the opportunity to build her skills and add to her portfolio as a student.
“I’ve been so fortunate during my time at Michigan State to be involved in a bunch of different extracurriculars, and I think that’s been the most helpful thing,” Kluge said. “Walking into a job interview with a portfolio of classwork and work from clubs and publications is ultimately the reason I got hired. I think having places to build your body of work, and showing a company what you’re all about is the most important thing.”
